It’s normal to feel frustrated by flaws in your teeth whether they’re crooked, chipped, yellowed, or have gaps you don’t like. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry provides plenty of solutions to hide or mend imperfections. Millions of people every year improve their lives by enhancing their smiles.

Before you and your dentist can decide on a plan, however, you must be on the same page. The first step toward revamping your grin consists of a consultation appointment so they can learn your dental history and goals. This is also the perfect opportunity for you to ask your questions. With that in mind, we’ve put together this list of 3 questions that will help you make informed decisions. Keep reading to learn more!

Question #1: What Is Your Experience with This Treatment?

Your dentist knows you don’t mean any offense by asking about their experience level with certain treatments. They have varying skill sets and areas of focus, and some have performed certain procedures hundreds of times while others may be newer at it. Depending on the work you’re having done, you may want to ensure they’re well versed in the process. That way you’ll have peace of mind and assurance that you’re in good hands, and a calm patient is easier for your dentist to manage than an anxious one.

Question #2: Am I A Good Candidate for This?

Though the focus of cosmetic dentistry is to elevate your appearance, your dentist’s overall primary goal is to keep your mouth healthy. Certain issues like tooth decay or gum disease could delay your cosmetic treatment because these concerns need to be dealt with first. Furthermore, depending on your overall dental well-being, some options may not be feasible.

For example, if you have cavities that you are unaware of, you shouldn’t have your teeth whitened until they’re filled. If a bleaching agent is placed over tooth decay, the harsh ingredients can painfully penetrate the root of your tooth. You won’t be a good candidate for it until your teeth are repaired.

Question #3: What Results Should I Expect?

Now’s the time to express exactly what you want so that your dentist can provide options to achieve that. As they’re explaining the choices, feel free to ask in detail what you can expect from each. You wouldn’t want to agree to something without a full understanding of how you’ll look and feel once it’s completed. You can inquire about the color, texture, and shape of your improved grin so you won’t be met with any surprises after the fact.

If you have other questions not included on this list, don’t hesitate to bring them up with your dentist when you get the chance. They’ll gladly walk you through each step of the process so you can feel confident the entire time. Then, when it’s all said and done, you’ll have the new and improved smile you deserve!
