A mouth with stained teeth

In most cases, tooth stains are pretty easy to remove. You can usually get rid of them with thorough toothbrushing or a store-bought bleaching kit. However, there are also times when discolored enamel seems like it just won’t go away. If that happens to you, there’s a good chance your stained teeth stem from genetics or equally stubborn causes. Fortunately, there are cosmetic treatments that can fix such stains. To learn more, here’s a summary of how genes can cause stained teeth and what your Buda dentist can do to help.

Can Genetics Cause Tooth Discoloration?

Genes can influence more than just eye color and height. They sometimes put you at greater risk of tooth stains. In particular, two known genetic conditions cause inherent staining:

  • Dentinogenesis Imperfecta: An issue that makes tooth enamel turn grayish and transparent. It can affect both baby teeth and permanent ones.
  • Amelogenesis Imperfecta: This condition causes yellow-brown tooth discoloring and fragile enamel. It also raises your odds of having tooth decay, not to mention chips and cracks.

Admittedly, though, genetic factors are rare. You’re much more likely to get tooth stains from poor oral hygiene, certain foods or drinks, or smoking.

How Your Cosmetic Dentist Can Help

Consider getting dental treatment if you think your stubborn tooth stains are genetic. Various procedures could fix your stained teeth, like:

Teeth Whitening

While store-bought whiteners might not remove your stains, those from a dentist could. After all, they would use more bleaching ingredients than over-the-counter items. As a result, this procedure could whiten your teeth by six to eight shades.

Direct Bonding

Dental bonding applies tooth-colored resin to hide all sorts of smile flaws. As such, it could do the same for your stains! Instead of a smile with stained teeth, then, the treatment would give you pearly whites that live up to their name.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin, ceramic layers that dentists apply to the front of teeth. Like direct bonding resin, they cover up smile flaws like chips, cracks, etc. So, if you don’t think you can get stains off your enamel, just hide them with great-looking porcelain.

No matter the cause of your stained teeth, you can count on your local dentist for a solution. That said, get in touch with them for possible treatment options!
