Implant dentures are a life changing tooth replacement option. Since the dental implants replace the roots of the missing teeth, they allow for a number of additional benefits that you can’t achieve with traditional dentures or dental bridges. This includes additional comfort, stability, and longevity. Getting implant dentures requires a multi-step process, including a surgical procedure. Read on to learn more about the dental implant placement process and when you can get your dentures.
How Long Does Dental Implant Placement Take?
The procedure begins with your dentist numbing your mouth with a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing. Sedation options are also available for additional comfort. Then, incisions are made so the dental implants can be precisely placed throughout the jawbone at strategic angles. Lastly, the gums are closed, and protective caps are placed over the ends of the implants to keep them safe as the area heals.
The whole process can take anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours or longer depending on the number of implants that you need. During your consultation, your dentist will be able to provide you with a more specific time estimate for your unique case. This way, you can plan accordingly.
How Long Is the Healing Period for Implant Dentures?
After your surgery is complete, the recovery period begins. This can take anywhere from three to six months. During this time, the titanium implants will fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This is what makes dental implants so stable and long-lasting. Swelling and discomfort are normal for a few days following your surgery and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. This should subside over the next few weeks. It is important that you take plenty of steps to keep the area clean and avoid foods that could aggravate the surgical site. Once the fusion process is complete, the next steps can be taken. The healing process takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months depending on the patient.
Finishing Your Implant Dentures
After your dental implants have completely fused to the jawbone, you will need to undergo another small procedure. Here, the abutments are attached to the ends of your dental implants. Impressions are also taken at this time so your denture can be customized at the dental lab. Once ready, you can return to the dental office. Your dentist will secure your replacement teeth to your dental implants via the abutments. If everything looks and feels great, you will be free to show off your new and improved smile to the world.
Getting implant dentures takes some patience, but the beautiful, long-lasting results are worth the wait!
