Have you postponed your dental cleaning for several months or years? Regardless of the reason why, you aren’t alone, as many people are in the same boat. However, with your appointment coming up, you might feel a bit nervous about it. You might’ve forgotten exactly what happens during these visits, so here’s a quick step-by-step playthrough to help you feel more confident.

Step #1: Getting Checked In

When you walk through the practice’s door, you’ll be greeted by the front desk team, who will check you in. Whether you’re a new or returning patient, you may be given some paperwork that will ask you questions about your dental and medical history, including current health conditions. Be completely honest when filling these out, as they can help your dentist be aware of any possible complications. Give them your dental insurance as well, since it can help make this appointment more affordable!

Step #2: X-Rays and Cleaning

As your treatment room becomes ready, you’ll start the process of being taken back to it. Right before, though, you may need to get some X-rays. These help show what can’t be seen with the naked eye. While these digital images are being taken, you’ll wear a lead vest and bite down on some plastic pieces.

Then it’s time to sit in the chair and answer any questions you have. Once your dental hygienist clears them up, then they will start to clean off plaque and tartar from your teeth. They use state-of-the-art instruments that are much quieter and more effective than ever before. You are likely to bleed or experience some discomfort, but it doesn’t mean there’s a problem going on.

Step #3: Finishing Up Your Visit

With your newly shone teeth, your dentist will take a peek and look for any oral health issues. Depending on what they find, they may recommend other treatments or give you advice on your at-home routine. You’ll be all good to go afterward, but don’t forget to schedule your next cleaning in six months! It might seem odd, but having these consistent visits will only get easier as you stick with them.

Although you might’ve been anxious about your upcoming appointment, keep in mind the usual layout of the visit above! You should feel proud of yourself for taking care of your smile. In the end, your teeth and gums will thank you and stay stronger for longer.
