Sleep Apnea Treatment
Do you experience excessive daytime sleepiness? Do you wake in the morning NOT feeling refreshed? Have you noticed a difference in your level of attention, concentration or memory? Has anyone told you that you snore or stop breathing while sleeping?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, you may have a sleeping problem. One of the leading reasons contributing to poor sleep is Sleep Breathing Disorder which includes Snoring and Sleep Apnea. You’re not alone if you do have sleep problems. It is estimated that 32 million Americans have some type of Sleep Breathing Disorder. And the experts believe the problem is growing fast. It is said that in 10 years, one in five Americans will be affected.
What if I don’t do anything about my sleep problem?
Aside from the everyday tiredness for you and your sleep partner, Sleep Breathing Disorders, and especially Sleep Apnea, can have devastating consequences if not properly diagnosed and treated.
The following are a few of the conditions caused or worsened by Sleep Apnea:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease & heart attack
- Depression
- Reflux (GERD)
- Diabetes
Treatment Options
- LIFESTYLE CHANGES – weight loss and smoking cessation can really help lessen the severity of Sleep Apnea.
- CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) – is an officious way to treat Sleep Apnea. This consists of the patient wearing a mask or nasal pillow connected to a small air pump which supplies continuous air flow past the airway obstruction and in to the lungs. While this treatment is considered the “gold standard”, many patients have found the system hard to consistently use thereby decreasing the effectiveness.
- ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY – is a technique used by dentists that consists of a mouthpiece worn at night which effectively opens the airway obstruction allowing the patient to breathe on their own. Many patients find oral appliances much easier to get used to thereby increasing compliance and effectiveness.
